Great story. Hope he gets the money to go to the Olympic Trials.
Isn't the junior WR in the 800m something like 1:42 high, 1:43 low? He's going to run that?
A good article. But I'm not sure I agree with this statement:
"He could turn pro right now and make $100,000, but he has no ego, no big head, and he wants to stay in school and get his degree. That says a lot about him"
I have a heard time believing a 3:37 Kenyan could make $100,000 a year. And if so, why not take the $100,000 and go to school on the side? It's not like JUCO or whatever division he is in is really furthering his running career.
"No matter what happens, I will be back next year. I want my associate's degree and then I want to go to a big school. That is the only way I can get a good job and help my family back in Kenya," he said.
It looks like he is marketing himself. I'd like to see SIU or Illinois take a shot at him.
you still have to like a guy like this. id rather he come here and use a scholarship instead of a spoiled american using one. and thats coming from a spoiled american using a track scholarship to get through school!

here is all-time list :
http://www.iaaf.org/statistics/toplists/inout=O/age=J/season=0/sex=M/all=y/legal=A/disc=800/detail.htmxwhat gives his team the belief he can run 1'43.6 this year ?
the current yearly junior lists give his pb as 1'46.87 run just 4/52 ago
http://www.iaaf.org/statistics/toplists/inout=O/age=J/season=2008/sex=M/all=n/legal=A/disc=800/detail.htmxhis stats :
http://www.iaaf.org/athletes/biographies/country=KEN/athcode=227458/index.htmlwhat is his coach smoking to think this kid can go from 1'46.8 to 1'43.6 this year ?!
the 1:46 was apparently run in 20-30 mph wind, winning by 2.5 seconds (sea ray relays).
any idea where he is going after rend lake??
whenever a kid like this is ambitious and good Americans are have alot of doubt, who cares, they guy is good and his hard work is paying off.

Auburn
How about he ends up at Oregon, UTEP, Wisco, or Iona? UTEP/Iona for obvious reasons... O because Vin has everyone... Wisco since Jerry has a shit ton of milers... Not Arkansas since McD is on the outs...
This is if he does not move on. I'm calling that, IF he makes the Kenyan Olympic Team and has a good/okay games, he'd sign then. If not, back to RLC for a year. If he rolls after that, he'd sign. If not, see above.
Oh and McLain's sincerity makes me gag. He is full of shit.
a little homework would probably turn up some more "good" info that would really make you gag
Alabama
kansas state... this has to be a joke right?
"Oh and McLain's sincerity makes me gag. He is full of shit."
What about McLain's sincerity makes you want to gag? I ran for him for two years at Rend Lake, and not only was he an excellent coach, but a very caring and nice guy. He was a friend to all his athletes and genuinley wnated to see them succeed. Are you basing your cynicism off of anything or is it just because he recruits foreigners?
He hides it well but he really is very selfish. He only likes you if you are the fastest, he only pays attention to you if you are fast when you get here or if you do happen to be boaz
Alabama, Auburn, Kansas State or Nike.
The coach from Alabama discovered him, but he also discovered Augustine Choge. Someone at Oregon might get in his ear and tell him to go pro while taking classes online at OSU or PSU.

When I was there he paid plenty of attention to me and I was nowhere near the number one guy.

I find that unlikely, has Choge even been to the States? But if he did, alot of good it did him!
