Is collegiate running holding the US back from reaching their true potential in the marathon? I'm not sure of the answer here, but I think there has got to be some sort of correlation between age and potential when it comes to running and improving in the marathon. I haven't really run numbers, but I'd assume US runners arrive much later to the big dance, especially when compared to many African runners.
Here are the results from the 2000, 2004, and 2008 US Oly Trials.

2008 Trials definitely had a good younger crop, which is pretty awesome to see. Martin Lel ran his first marathon at either 23 or 24 and he is still under 30. Wanjiru obviously has a small lifetime of marathon glory and improvement ahead of him. I started a post about Culpepper but nobody really grabbed on to it. But there is a guy who debuted at 2.09.41 at 30 years old...but never really got better. And I mean better in terms of World class.
So anyway...enter collegiate running between 17/18 years old. Give 5 years over to focusing on the 5/10k and then leave to possibly evolve to a marathoner by 25 years old.
Any thoughts?
