Was he crawling?
I always assumed he would run 10 miles in that time.

okay two things, 1. 49 minutes is exceptionally slow for a 400. 2. even 49 seconds isn't impressive for a world class 1500 meter runner. I'd be surprised if he didn't have that kind of speed.
marty liquori could run 47 secs.
Steve Cram had 48s in the 400 and still was way faster the Liqouri. I would guess most of the top 1500 guys run 400 in that range (47-49sec). Speed isn't everything.
sub-50 speed for world class 1500m runners is pretty common.

It's pretty common because it's pretty necessary.
Yea, I've never met a sub 4:10 miler who can't run 49. I'm guessing his coach is just testing his 400 ability off of his base phase. He will be able to go 47 by the end of the year, but by then he'll have no business racing a 400 all-out.
This kid will blast everyone to pieces.
A 4:10 guy can get away with 53-54.
Hopefully he didn't tweak a hamstring. I didn't realize how much it sucked until it happened Tuesday and I hobbled through my normal runs the day after.

That man is a credit to his height.

Ritz most likely can't come close to 49.
In a typical year, the best 1600 guy at my high school could crack 50
Ask brother O'Connell from St. Patrick's in Kenya who he thought is/was the most talented he ever coached. He will say Kipchirchir...he was rattling off some impressive workout stats. Said he had some insane ability..but Kip never broke 3:30 and is still yet to be a stud like El G or lagat or even Webb.
I ain't impressed with this kid until he can consistently bust a nut.

where has kipchirchir been? he was downright nasty in 2006. He closed in like 35/36 for the last 300 at the 2006 world cup 1500

That is either:
1) A bold face lie
2) These 1600m runners aren't actually 1600m runners
3) Yours is the only school in the nation
Very very few schools will have one 400m guy go sub 50 per year.

can't agree with that
Didn't Webb run 47-low in high school? 49 is ok, I guess, for a guy with Kiprop's speed.
