Most valuable means most important to their team. Take away every MVP candidate from their team and what are you left with?
With Lebron, the Cavs are the number 4 seed in the East. Without him, they are easily 15-20 games under .500. Lebron has NO help.
With Chris Paul, the Hornets are the surprise number 1 seed of the West, the most competitive conference in at least a decade. Without him, they miss the playoffs.
Kobe - the same as Chris Paul, except his teammates are better. If Paul has the worse supporting cast but his team finishes with a better record, clearly that says something.
Garnett - was the catalyst for the transformation of the Celtics. The C's added Garnett and Allen and suddenly went from 24-58 to 62-16. Was it because of Allen? Sure, a little, but almost everyone credits the turnaround to Garnett. 34 games under .500 to 46 games over .500 in one season, and everyone credits it to KG.
It's gotta be KG.
