I suffered a stress fracture in the upper third of my tibia back in early December. Although I ran on it for a while before getting it properly diagnosed, I took the necessary time off and started back thinking things would be ok. However, I can’t seem to get the dull pain to go away. What could be the problem and any suggestions on what I can do about it? I know scar tissue builds up sometimes. Could that be it, and if so, what could I do? Massage??? Also, I’ve read about the muscles around the bone tightening up so as to protect the bone. Could that be it? Anyone ever had a similar problem?

If you live in LA there is a great Laser treatment that helps coming back or dealing with injuries. I think the name of the laser company is Aveciena. I know a lot of pros use it.

How long did you take off and what kind of cross training did you do? I've had a tibial SF that took over 3 months to heal because I ran on it for a while and did too much elliptical training too soon.

Basically pain is your guide. If it hurts it means it isn't healed and you need to back off. With a SF I would recommend that you wait for it to be totally pain free for a few weeks, before you even think about running. The extra time is worth it because if it comes back you are going to miss another 2 months anyway.

yeah ive had a tibial stress fracture and a week into rest i tried to run once and have rested ever since for about 8 weeks. when i curl my toe upwards and touch my toes there's a little sharp pain that isnt bad but it feels weird like a needle or something. is this the scar tissue build up?

I had a tibial stress fracture around 3 years ago and I took the 3 months off and all signs showed it to be "totaly gone" However, it always hurt still, that dull pain.

I ran it for a bit and tried to take more time off. I've struggled through a bullshit 2.5 years of going on and off of training because the pain never went away and everyone always told me to not run on it if there is pain present.

I quit running 6 months ago, and haven't even done it recreationally or done much athletic other than lift weights. I still feel the pain and it hasn't gone away one bit. So honestly I don't think the pain will ever go away. I might try running agian someday and I think I'll just have to get used to it and accept that the pain is just there.

Probably not what you wanted to hear but it's the sick and awful truth about this f***ed up shit called injuries

I have a tibia stress fracture right now. It has been 8 weeks since I have done any activity. And I have been wearing an Aircast as well (http://www.aircast.com/index.asp/fuseaction/products.detail/cat/2/id/76). This has been helping a ton. The aircells protect the calf muscles and keep them from working or tightening up around the bone.

I plan on riding my bike or getting in a pool this week. Do cross training for 4 more weeks before I attempt running again.

This is the same plan I used 3 years ago after a stress fracture and it worked well.
