I actually helped translating his book, in 2005 when living in Frankfurt. Don't know if it ever came out though. Now as luck would have it, I live near him, will be meeting him for a run Sunday week, can ask a few things if anyone has some good questions, obviously not insulting;) He's very intelligent, I also don't see how he would be so dumb to take nandralone himself... He's very active in promoting athletics in the area, fundraising for his club, amazingly down to earth. Last time we went training, he said he would change his training to fit around mine!! He's actually very funny and quick witted

Wow! some great stuff here - the BMC article is really interesting. Schadenfraude, I would love to know Dieter's thoughts on training for oler runners - how he would adapt training if he wanted to be competitive at 5 - 15k in his 40s and beyond. It seems he has already discovered the secret of a long and successful career and I wonder how he would apply what he knows to a masters athlete.
Many thanks.
Schadenfreude I remember when you were translating that book. You sent me soft copies every few chapters. I printed them out but don't know where I kept them. Pity. Perhaps some of your old email accounts may still have them?
Can he add his previous training to his webiste. I recall viewing several years worth from his return to competition thru his last 8k race. The training suggestions for masters runners is also of great interest.
If you're relaying questions, I'd love to know if he has any sort of focus to his running these days. E.g. when he ran the Frankfurt Marathon did he have any performance level in mind or was it purely to finish the race, does he do any racing at shorter distances, etc.
I've also always been interested in van Aaken and have wondered if van Aaken's ideas have survived and if there are athletes or coaches using van Aaken's ideas other than Steffney.
Frankfurt was a purely fundraising event for him. People had to predict his time, and for every minute under 3 hours, the sponsors gave 1000 Euro; half of which was going to the renovation of the Tübingen's stadium, where 3 local schools train. The remaining 50% was for Baumann and his partners to initiate a unique National projsct. Together with Hessen's and Württemberg's Athletic Boards, they would give to the talented newbloods for one year from December.

He runs the Tübinger Adventslauf half marathon every year, and wins - I think he helps organise it too. Isabelle, his wife, organises the International Tübinger Stadtlauf (14th Sept this year) but he hasn't done that in a while.
I'll ask him some of those questions for you anyway about van Aaken, and I'll tell him to get his site up to date for you! Regarding training for older 5k 10k runners, the stuff on the site I think still applies, especially the videos. I haven't time to translate it all for you - sorry. I'll try asking him anyway
Baumann - 80% of training was 'easy' running in the forest at 4:00-4:20 per km.
20% of the training was very structured track sessions, with times on the track simulating the times he achieved in 1500/5000 (3:33/12:50's)

Danke sehr.
Bump...more training insight? How was the run?

Does he walk around for recoveries, or jog slowly?
What pace or effort for the 20 x 1'?
He jogs slowly. 2' recovery for most 1,000 meter repeats.

What an unfair tarnish to a great runner. He was essentially the first great white hope against the East Africans. He ran sub 13/low 13 5000m when the WR was still 12:55 by Kiptanui.
His training was not unlike Wejo's. Go easy on the easy days, go hard on the hard days. Simple, yet effective.
What's unfair??
Step 1. Go Back and re-read the threads explaining the toothpaste issue and negative drug tests.
Step 2. Comprehend what you read.

No toothpaste whatever oral intake can test as high nandralone as Dieter did. I took it by the vein.
Schadenfreude - did you get to run with Dieter and ask him any of the questions that people wanted to put to him?
I had followed this story in 2000 and I had heard teh German federation had in fact tested his kids and his kids even tested positive. This was brought to my attention by a visiting German medical student and I admitted, I would have trouble believing even the worst doper would gibe his kids the stuff. This is perhaps the reflection of how randon drug testing is for both dopers and non-dopers. On the other hand Look at Marion Jones. PED's have a long lasting effect on your body even after you test clean and she was out having a kid with Tim MOntgomery
anyway to translate the video's on this site
