so on a perfunctory four miler today, and after almost 28 yrs of long-slow-distance, I got to thinking: How fast could I have been? I've never done speed work - ever. I'm one of those guys who just enjoyed logging miles for my head's sake. My second race ever after six months of running at 26 yrs. old was a 5:06 mile. My first race was a 34 min. five-miler. My best ever mile on a non-certified course was 4:54. After 12 yrs. of LSD (basically,around 8 min. miles), and up to 60 miles per week, I ran a 3:16 marathon. So using that first mile time, had I learned how to incorporate some 400 and 800 repeats - or any other type of speed work - any speculation on 5K,10K, and marathon capability while in my 30s or early 40s? I guess I'm at that point where I want to say, "well, I could have..."
