Happy birthday, BR!
Bill Rodgers is one the most down-to-earth, friendly people I've ever met. Catch him at a race or some other event and he's happy to talk shop, tell stories, or just shoot the bull. I hope he had a great birthday...with many more to follow.
agreed, Bill was a great guy and it sounds like he still is.
Happy 60th Bill!
here is my Boston Billy story:
when I was 17 (1977) or so, I went to Boston to watch the marathon and visit a running friend. maybe 2 days before the race I'm in Bill's running store (the original location) and I'm just looking at stuff on the wall, clippings, posters, memorabilia.
Bill comes over and asks me a few questions and I suppose I appeared knowledgeable. Already I am pretty stoked just to be talking with him, and then he says, "hey, if you are interested we're going to be watching some movies tonight here in the store after we close, why don't you come by?."
I showed up and they had a 16mm projector and a movie about the NYC marathon (which he won). there were about a dozen people including Bill, his brother I think and me a punk kid. they passed around popcorn etc.
Can you imagine the equivalent heroes in other sports (e.g. Barry Bonds) doing anything like that today??
What the hell kind of comment is that??? Seriously !
last year before the lakefront marathon in milwaukee i went for about a 3 mile run with him and several others. he was very nice and answered everyones questions. he actually asked more questions of us than we did of him. he seemed like a very decent guy.
Bill is probably the most humble professional athlete you'll ever meet. Even w/all his accolades and achievements; he never boasts or brags....he's genuinely interested in helping promote the sport in America ---He goes out of his way to encourage runners of all ages and abilities to reach their goals. He truly epitomizes what distance running is all about.
I'm glad to see that the webmaster removed the idiotic remark made by someone in relation to Bill Rodgers turning 60 yrs old.
Bill is a legend in this sport and always will be...hopefully, up and coming runners will emulate his graciousness and passion for the sport.
Happy Birthday Bill!
He's a great runner and an even better person.
I share Bill Rodger's birthday (different year). I never knew that. Also born on December 23rd:
Susan Lucci
Joseph Smith (the Mormon prophet)
Cory Haim
Eddie Vetter
Connie Mack
Harry Shearer
I have enjoyed following Bill's career since I was a kid hearing about his first Boston win. He had so many great races but my two favorite memories concerning him was running miles 9-13 of a marathon with listening to him chat all the way. Of course he was just running 13 miles for a fun workout. The other was 2 years ago at a small 5 miler in NH where I watched Bill finish the race by splashing through all the puddles he could find, just like a little kid smiling all the way. Everyone else ran grim faced to the finish. This man loves running!
Happy Be-lated Birthday, Southern Man! Now, weren't you happy to find out you shared a B-day w/a running legend?
You and Bill are sort of on the cusp of Capricorn and Sagitarius....Bill has a lot of qualities of both signs...bet you do too ;)
Running is such a terrific sport to keep you young! I mean, look at Bill at 60! He still looks to be in his forties...
