1. I thought I knew road racing before:
Yet did I never breathe its pure serene
Till I heard Tesh speak out loud and bold:
2. Salazar, rumors or not, had a gigantic set of onions.
3. Styx soundtrack at the end -- cool!
Thanks, Juan. You do good work. Happy New Year.

Thanks!
I remember watching that race on CBS. Amazing but true, the big 3 networks used to cover some road races!
'In regards to 1978
A quick story. I work with Mike Slack these days and he has some great road racing stories. In \'78 he and his buddy BJ. Gary Bjk. decided before the race to take it out at a blistering pace to open the race up early. They went through the first mile in about 4:12. To their suprise everyone was right in tow. After 2 miles in around 8:30 range. The pace began to slow.
Mike said a one point late in the race he passed Salazar who had begun the weave back and forth across the road suffering from the heat. Said he collasped at the finish and the IV\'s started.
A great era of road racing...real hard racing!

Oh was this the year that CBS or another network did a 1/2 show on Falmouth (and you edited it) or was that another year?
The CBS coverage for that race was of 17 minutes (excluding commercials). The only sections that I edited were some interviews with the race organizer and the winners (Salazar and Virgin).
I also have the 1983 Phoenix Continental Homes 10K that Salazar won in a great battle with Mike Musyoki. That race was also showed by CBS.
I'll upload that one soon...
OK then you edited my brief appearance out! Maybe ESPN showed Falmouth one year also?
I remember that other race and used to have it on video.
Thanks for the videos. They are fun to watch!
He must have edited out the interview with Lynn Petronella, too. She must have explained how she coached Joan Benoit back into good shape after surgery.
Fairly consistent times for the top ten.

where are all of the top Americans in recent years?
I sure don't remember John Tesh ever doing any sports announcing?! I remember him hosting the Entertainment news show and of course he's been big for years with his piano playing new age music...but, sports announcing? He did ok.
You think American kids would come to distance running if a big race like this had alot of top Americans in it?
Hey McGato,
The interview about the recovery of Joan Benoit was showed in full during the preview of the womens 1984 Oly Trials... I have the full race of the '82 Falmouth and they did not show anything about it... I think I have The Runner magazine of those trials though...I'll try to scan that in...
In the 1983 Phoenix 10K John Tesh is also announcing the race along with Rod Dixon for CBS...
John Tesh was the part-owner of a small running store at 76th and Columbus Avenue on the Upper West Side in the early 80s.
I ran right behind Bill Rodgers for the 1st few miles in the Beverly Hills Perrier 10k road race in the late 70s, which was a pretty big race, locally. (the race that had the 'waiters division', where waiters in full tuxedos ran carrying a tray with a bottle of Perrier on it...no, I'm not joking), but, my main point was to say how surprised I was at Bill Roders soft, almost floating stride. It reminded me alot of the Kenyans I had run against before in college and on the roads. Just floating along, almost on a pad of air...while I'm clomping along, obviously using alot more force and energy. That had to be one of his 'secrets to success', though it's nothing one could emultate. You either had it or you didn't. Salazar on the other hand, had an awkward, almost painful looking stride.
"I sure don't remember John Tesh ever doing any sports announcing?! I remember him hosting the Entertainment news show and of course he's been big for years with his piano playing new age music...but, sports announcing? He did ok."
I think he reported for the Ironman too as well as other sporting events, and made the music for an Ironman broadcast, too. There might be a cd.
Im pretty sure that there is a video of the 1978 Falmouth Road Race. It was more about the lore of the race even though it was only about 4 or 5 years old at the time. That's how quickly the race became a classic event. You had Shorter, Rodgers, Liquori in the early years followed quickly by Salazar, Virgin, Dixon etc.
IF anyone has a copy of that race, that would be great to see.
kind of funny. bob hodge ran 33:12 in both races ('78 & '82)
amazing how the times stay about the same too.

What is the most stupid running advice you've ever heard?🤣(It can be funny)
Are Asics, Saucony, and New Balance envious of Brooks, Hoka ,and On?
