For years the team at East High School in Rochester, NY, were called (maybe still are?) the Orientals. Well, "Oriental" just means "of/from the East," right?
IIRC it's a mostly black school...

The year after I left, my middle school changed their mascot to the Panters because the original was sexist.
The Panters? In middle school? Was the mascot a middle aged gym teacher all sweaty and drooling?
umm ..... wrote:
You want to mock changing a racially insensitive mascot? You are an a**hole.

Come on dude.....That's a pretty generic name to get your thong in a bundle about. The reality is that any name can be offensive to anybody.
How about the Lincoln Monuments?
yeah, okay wrote:

What do you call a dizzy Chinese man?
Disoriented.
The madness has hit two Sun Belt Conference schools...the Louisiana-Monroe Indians are now the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks. The Arkansas State Indians will soone by the Arkansas State whatevers (I don't think they've picked yet). Pretty soon, the passivists will come after the North Texas Mean Green...can't have something that implies anger in a nickname.

The Ole Miss Rebels had their mascot taken away since it too was "racist." We currently have no mascot...it's ridiculous.
The problem with the University of Mississippi is they have a long, ugly, violent, stubborn racist history. During the years of Jim Crow (1877 until 1964) Mississippi was the worst of all the southern states, and certainly the most dangerous for anyone darker than Walter White (yes, by all means, look him up). Their mascot always kinda resembled Yosemite Sam--or was it the other way around?
I went to Texas in the 70's, and there was still a lot of remanticism regarding most of the antebellum traditions at the school (fraternities serenading a sorority house in confederate uniforms--that sort of thing). Some of it was harmless, and some of it was narrow-minded and bigoted and used the university's tacit approval to give it legitimacy. We were at school to learn, after all.
Rebels, at least to me, is no more offensive than Volunteers or Minutemen. But Ole Miss really has a reason to be a little more sensitive, not to mention careful, than most in matters regarding their mascot, nickname, flag, and school traditions.
Rebels offensive? What exactly do you call George Washington, Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, Henry Knox, Benjamin Franklin, Robert Morris, and all the other founding fathers of our nation? Weren't they "rebels" when they rebelled against the British government? Oh, I see, they were "patriots" because we won but the Confederates were "rebels" because they lost. Had we lost the revolution, every man who signed his name to the Declaration of Independence would have been dangling from the end of a rope on the gallows and be labeled "traitors" in the history books, much like Robert Lee and Jefferson Davis are today. It's time people stop bringing up the Civil War like it happened last week. It was important in bringing our nation together as one and was certainly needed at the time. Just because someone fought for the South doesn't mean they believed in slavery any more than someone fighting for the North considering blacks to be equal to whites. Damn, thank God Great Britain didn't hold a 150-year-grudge against us for our "rebellious" and "traitorous" actions.

How much complaining would you see when his face shows up on a butt cushion?
To Rebels Is Not Offensive: re-read my post. You may want to take back much of what you were blathering about. You're making yourself look like an idiot.
I'm out.
Akron East High School is still the Orientals as well.
Also a somewhat 'ethnically diverse' high school.
