I do not have much flexibility in my hip flexors at all; at the ends of most of my runs my hip flexors get so tight that it is difficult to lift my legs. Are they overworked? Weak? any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I have the same problem. Most likely it is because they are weak. Find someone who knows there stuff and have them show you some strengthening techniques. Mine are primarily done with hurdles.
work out the psoas with some art.
have your woman ride you hard. try some reverse cowgirl.
