My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
oh my god. i'm speechless.
This is an unspeakable tragedy. My heart goes out to him, his family, and especially his wife.
I can't imagine the depth of sorrow the elite running community is experiencing, exemplified by the Halls, who were teammates of Alicia Shay's and must go from the highest of highs in life to dealing with the worst all in a matter of an hour.
Tragic... Sudden death with a healthy athlete is always a shocker... It will be really interesting to find out what happened... I feel bad for his family. I think he and his wife just married this past summer... Tragic...
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. I Recall hanging out with Ryan, in Birmingham, in 2004 and sharing a cooldown with him in philadelphia in 2003. A nice guy--tragic loss.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family epecially his wife Alicia. Her beliefs have been criticized on this board before but at this time thank god that she has such strong beliefs hopefully they can carry her through this horible time. She is a wonderful person I don't know her well but very kind and sweet.
After they went by the first time I was just south of the 40k mark. There was a commotion that someone was performing CPR on someone just around the corner. Didn't know it was a runner. Then before the runners came back around again there was an ambulance trying to get up to fallen runner rather slowly. Actually was stopped a couple of times for people who would not get out the way. Then when the runners came around again the ambulances were directly in front of them
When I cam back over to the 40k point again which would have been 14+ miles overhead someone talking on the phone that Ryan had passed away. It puts a damper on a good event. My prayers are with this family.

He died at 5.5 miles into the race. I would think at that point he would not have even been close to max effort. So why would he have problems today? Usually elite athletes die of heart attacks because of a congenital heart defect, but just think of all the hard efforts that he has put in over the last 15 years as a distance runner.
He was only 28 years old.
it makes no sense at all. hyponatremia? not likely, but it's the only thing that makes even a sliver of sense.
A friend and co-woker died unexpectedly at age 21. He had a wife and 2 young daughters. At the funeral someone said God needs good people up in heaven. RIP Ryan
Incredibly sad. I didn't know him but everyone in the running community is saddened by this loss. It was such a great day... but this is just so terrible.
To an Athlete Dying Young
by A. E. Housman (1859-1936)
The time you won your town the race
We chaired you through the market-place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high.
To-day, the road all runners come,
Shoulder-high we bring you home,
And set you at your threshold down,
Townsman of a stiller town.
Smart lad, to slip betimes away
From fields were glory does not stay
And early though the laurel grows
It withers quicker than the rose.
Eyes the shady night has shut
Cannot see the record cut,
And silence sounds no worse than cheers
After earth has stopped the ears:
Now you will not swell the rout
Of lads that wore their honours out,
Runners whom renown outran
And the name died before the man.
So set, before its echoes fade,
The fleet foot on the sill of shade,
And hold to the low lintel up
The still-defended challenge-cup.
And round that early-laurelled head
Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead,
And find unwithered on its curls
The garland briefer than a girl's.
Oh Man what a tragedy, Hy heart sank when I read this. As others have said, my heart goes out to his new bride, family and friends.
Rich
I just heard about this on NBC following their coverage of the race. Horrible. My prayers go out to his family.

David Kamani died unexpectedly as well. Not even while running. Weird stuff. Horrible news.
Wow. Makes me think about Kimani.
Has to be some sort of undetected problem. Maybe just something electrical/brain related. I'm sure there will be an autopsy and an announcement.
Hard to understand, however, how these things can be missed with an athlete like this that's so carefully monitored. Although the last time I went to a cardiologist the doctor didn't even put me on the treadmill. He said he felt it was unnecessary. Gave me a heart ultrasound instead. Sorta odd I thought.
But it makes me think that perhaps some doctors make assumptions about runners and their hearts based on their conditioning. That could make you miss something.
A tragedy of enormous proportions, regardless. So unfortunate....
I truly hope he died before the ambulance got there and he didn't die because the ambulance couldn't get through the runners fast enough.
