Why do parents feel a sense of entitlement for their son or daughter to be rewarded for half-assed training, lackluster racing and extremely poor attitude causing team dissention? I've a senior girl, (a 2150 at best 5k type) who feels she is entitled to run in this weekends regional meet.
I've mutiple girls running faster and several who are a bit slower but who have improved all season, are fearless trainers / racers and exhibit a great attitude. (I opted for one who has been dropping her time by an average of 30 secs. per week over the last three). When the regional team was announced, the senior went into her weekly tirade (this time profanity laced) and about she deserves, this, that, blah, blah, blah. How she's going to run in college yada, yada.
I met with the AD and he is in 100% agreement with my decision and ironically the entire team does not endorse her for a regional spot either. It seems there is always one pain in the ass to make the season a challenge, then to add the parents really takes the fun out of coaching.
