so in other words, when he's ready to race, he's one of the top american distance runners, but if he's not ready, then what? is he risking injury, or just not one of the top american distance runners? you're saying there's no grey area?

He is good, especially when he is healthy. There is grey area, such as last year where is XC result was pretty good but not great.
My guess is that they are easing back on his work and will try what worked for Teg. This will hurt him in XC, especially at NCAAs where it is 10k. It would be interesting to see him race Rupp on the track at 5000 (but Rupp is RS, altough he might run at the Invites) because if he can stay on Rupp's wheels MW has a kick and a desire to use it that might only be matched by Lomong.

I think the ASU women can sneak into second place behind Stanford if Olson runs like she did at Pre Nats. But I also think the Washington Huskies can sneak into second place also if Campbell, Follett and Miller all run well at the same meet. Here is my women's top 10.
1. Lambie
2. Mc Walters
3. Blood
4. Kingma
5. Campbell
6. Hardt
7. Follett
8. Kosinski
9. Cocco
10. Follmar
Might the team score come down to non-scoring members (bumping others further back) because it is that close for 2nd.
hmmm... it seems to me that Kyle Alcorn is not given much credit here. correct me if im wrong, but i do beleive he placed 7th at NCAA's and 12th at USA's for the steeple this year. I know this is a totally different race, but come on... seriously.
will the fires affect ucla?
I heard that the air quality is 10x worse than normal in la
I talked to a friend who lives in L.A, and he told me that both UCLA and USC have to train this week either in the early morning or at night because of the air quality. The UCLA men have a chance to be in the top 3 if they run well. Austin Ramos looks like he is ready to run a big race. I don't know if the poor air quality will have any impact. The UCLA women might benefit from the dirty air because their season has been very poor thus far. A wiff of some dirty air might wake these Bruins up and propel them into the top 5. USC doesn't have a men's team in cross country but their women are doing pretty good this season. They are strong up top with Sarah Cocco and the Hungary girl, but they lack the depth to crack the top 5 at Pac-10's.
It depends on the wind direction. If you are downwind from the fires there is a lot of soot etc. However, in general Santa Ana conditions result in less severe pollution since it blows off the temperature inversion layer that acts like a lid to keep pollutants in. In addition, some of the standard pollutants (ozone) are 'brewed' by the sun, and the day length and sun angle diminish this effect. However the biggest improvements in air during a Santa Ana is out in the valleys, especially the eastern valleys because then they are not importing pollution from the west.
I do not know the current situation for USC/UCLA, although USC is pretty much a non-factor in the league race.

Look for Oregon to bring a "B" team to the Pac-10 Championships. They wont have their best team competing together until Regionals in two weeks. Same goes for the Stanford women. This meet is a time trial to those two teams and I guarantee both will not rest for this meet.
i could see them not running their full "A team", except that i could understand if they ran rupp just so he can have one race to gear himself before going into regionals. but i could see them resting a mercado, a trujillo, biwott, and maybe someone else. i wonder if aj acosta will run at pac-10's.
They need to figure out which of the guys in 4/5/6/7/8/9/10 fit where, and the Pac-10 race will tell them. Since i saw that Rupp was going to open his season there it will be him, w/o Biwott and/or Mercado#1, so I'm guessing it will be Rupp/4/5/6/7/8/9/10/11.
What's the format for qualifying out of regionals these days? I mean the auto teams. Is it still two?
