Torre rejects offer
Torre rejects offer
I think its best for both sides to move on. Any speculation on a replacement?
How fitting for the Red Sox to have this happen on this day. This should be all the Sox need to push them into the WS.
Go Beckett!
I don't understand the article saying at the end that Steinbrenner decided to make a change. They offered him a contract to return, and he still would have been the highest paid manager in the league, with a chance for performance bonuses. Sounds like they still wanted him around, but demanded better results for higher pay. I agree it is probably best for him to move on, he shouldn't have much trouble finding a job.
They offered him a lower pay? He should either be their manager or not. Money has nothing to do with that. It was an insult to offer him a lower amount of money.
No amount of money is going to make him or Francona a good enough manager to beat the Indians though. That is just asking for a miracle. You are next Clint Hurdle. Prepare yourself for a beatdown.
Hey, for $2.5 million I'LL manage the Evil Empire.
No, it was an insult to the way the front treated him over the last month.
No, it was an insult for the front office to treat him the way they did. *correction
I like Torre. I hope that he is not out!
get him brewers!!
Can't say I'm a fan of the Yankees (or baseball), but I do follow the game a bit because I live in NY.
It really seems to me that the NYY should have gotten rid of Torre a few years ago. Hard to remember now, but I believe I'm thinking of the year or two *before* the whole debacle with the Red Sox. The "old" George Steinbrenner would never have stood for this sh!t for all these years.
I know a lot of the current Yankees are comfortable with Torre, but that's sort of the problem. Man for man, they're maybe the best players in baseball--certainly top three--and it's ridiculous that they've gone out in the first round, what, three years in a row now? I think the Yanks are comfortable with Torre but they've also gotten "comfortable" with just making the playoffs. That doesn't fly in NY.
There's a natural arc in the career of most pro teams' managers/coaches. After a while, the players just stop listening, and somebody new is needed--even though there could be one or even two down years during the transition.
Personally, I'd enjoy seeing the Yankees managed by LaRussa--more so than Mattingly, who probably feels like he "owes" something to the older players. But whatever--new blood was needed, and I'm glad the team (finally) is going to get it.
[Parenthetically: I think ARod should be a shoo-in (sp?) for MVP. He almost singlehandedly kept the Yankees going during the first two months of the season.
[And I also think that Posada, even more than ARod, is the one guy that the Yanks should do *everything* to retain.]
the one year contract offer has to be factored in as well. first they make him wait a long time, despite 12 straight playoff appearances, and then they say we're going to make you go through this exact thing next year (the 1 year contract), plus we'll pay you less. now, $5 million is no insult. that's about 250 times what I'm making right now. but recall the context.
Bring in Girardi, his proven ability to produce with young players is perfect for this team. Let Mo go, keep Petite, Jeter and Posada on as the vets, let arod go, and try to forget that skeleton in centerfield known as Damon. Then you have a solid young team with a couple of very good (even legendary) veteran players and a young, hungry coach. Not a bad situation.
let mo and arod go? are you retarded?
When is the date of his execution?
Jorge Torres came out? what?
