its on the letsrun front page
Who is that dude on his Nike shirt?
why do you guys look down on runners that are less tallented than you? why do you care? the only thing I can think is you haven't really run these fast times you constantly say you have. Because if you had I don't think you'd care. Every very good runner I know is happy for me when I break my crappy PRs. They know I work my ass off. I'm incredibly happy with my running, I run for a mediocore college xc team but we all work our asses off and enjoy what we are doing.
This video is hilarious by the way. I love that he collects Jordans, that is amazing.
Abdi thinks Dave Chappelle is funny? Sure, if by funny, you mean racist. Can't believe Abdi would like someone such as Chappelle. Chappelle sold out whatever comedic talent he might have had by going for the low-lying fruit that is racist comedy. C'mon Abdi, you're better that this - I hope.

i'm sorry that i wasn't the cool kid in high school. that was my big dream, anyway...not making the olympic marathon team or anything like that. as for this sport being a meaningless pursuit, if that means living in a $500k+ house and testing the furthest possible limits of the human body then you should probably put a lampshade on your head. and to think--you ran a 29:30 8k in basketball shorts! there is real testing of the human body...
your comments are inaccurate because they are based on YOUR personal experiences and the way YOU participated at high school parties when you were 28 years old...
and as for gaining an eating disorder? thats your own fault. probably shouldve run faster than 15:59, then you wouldn't be so disappointed in gaining an eating disorder. imagine, eating healthy and losing weight...what a shame...
Nope, I actually have run a 29:30 10k and I was once THAT guy who was completely self-absorbed in his own myopic little running utopia, totally disengaged from life outside of running, and spending many of my "study" hours in college buried in Track & Field news like so many of you are (though now it's letsrun.com) "dreaming the big dream." Thank God it was only for a short period of my life, because, see, even though I have run faster than probably anyone else who has posted on this particular thread, I realized early on the futility of it all and just how immersed in the running "cliques," as so many of you are without realizing it, I was. Utterly one-dimensional and closing out so many other wonderful facets of life.
I am easily amused thinking back to all of the 33:00 10k guys moving to Boulder, working at Runners Roost, and hoping to get an in to the "running crowd." You can put a "value" on what someone like Abdi has amassed in wealth, but what legacy has he really left, other than to leave all of you a cute little topic for meaningless masturbation? And here's the painfully true and funny part. NONE of you will ever be anywhere close to Abdi. Probably 1% of 1% of talented distance runners actually "make it," while so many others end up behind the 8-ball pursuing a worthless pursuit until they are some 29 or 30 years of age, before they realize how foolish they were. I'm trying to do you a favor really, but go ahead and keep condemning what I wrote. You will think back to this thread when you are 33 years old, washed up with achy knees, and just starting a career as a customer service rep for some fortune 500 company. Fools.

foolish for being involved in something we all care about, instead of being involved in something more harmful to ourselves or others... you must still lost in your one-dimensional world if your on letsrun.com bashing on a bunch of us who love running and like to watch abdi and others and pretend that somehow we would break through and could run for a living... or just watch because its fun to imagine what it would be like... its pathetic that you have to put people down who just like to follow something they care about... think about it, grow up if you truly dont like running and dont even bother to post on here.. cause you wont win

No, not really.

Nope, you've got this all wrong. I DO admire someone who is trying to improve, set goals, and work towards living a healthier and fitter life. But only to the point until it becomes an all-consuming, short-sighted, borderline obsessive endeavor. You don't know this yet, and you can't possibly, but if you are among those I am making reference to, you will think back to this thread in many years, shake your head in confirmation, and laugh.
so you're saying "do it half assed and get mediocre results...like me!"?
just checkin.
Wrong again. I'm saying, do not let it be the sole preoccupation of your life. I was pretty damn good and I did not pursue it half-heartedly and THAT is exactly my point.
to me, it seems as if you are turning to your old, silly ways, coming on to a message board, boasting about your tremendous 29:30 back-in-the-day. because you decided to quite while you were..."ahead"...we are all mourning. i mean, i wonder what you could've run, had you actually taken the time?

what the hell are you talking about? Dave Chappelle is a comedic genius... he is absolutely hilarious...
how is he racist? because he wouldn't tsak
I'm not boasting friend. THAT is the point. I was all-consumed as many of you are and all I could muster was a 29:30. Was it worth it? Not for me, and it won't be for so many of you who probably won't even get that fast. 29:30 is not that good, certainly not enough to give up practically everything in your life so you can put in the mind-numbing, tendon-wearing, fruitless mega miles.
sorry i accidently screwed up the end of that post and sent it.
So why is he a racist? because he didn't take Comedy Central's shit and walked away leaving millions because he was refusing to give up his integrity for dollars?

By you saying Chappelle is racist proves only one thing: you are racist! You have to be an idiot to think Chappelle is racist. It's called parody.
I think your argument is still flawed here. You make it seem as though what you used to be is how the entire running population currently is. I would say that "1% of 1%", or 0.01%, of runners actually move other places and put their lives on hold so that they may pursue a dream of becoming a running star. And what is wrong with that? If runners do not try and better themselves with the way they train and the lifestyle that they live, then how are we ever going to see an improvement in American distance running?
All runners will follow their talent in different ways. I for one, likely similar to many others, am training extremely well right now while working a full-time job in the field I majored in while in college. I couldn't give two sh*ts that I won't be anywhere close to where Abdi is in my life, but as long as I work hard and do what I enjoy doing then I have fulfilled all that I need to.
So what if only "1% of 1%" of runners actually go pro. This outlines how amazing the sport really is. It is extremely difficult, but despite that fact thousands of runners nationwide still run in an attempt to simply better themselves. Talk to any football, baseball, or basketball player, and alot of them will say they are in it simply because it is their passion and they really enjoy playing the game.
In closing, you are not doing anyone on this board or anyone else a favor. Just because you think of your past as fruitless and unhappy doesn't mean anyone else will share the same fate, and if anyone does, let them find out for themselves and then you all can have an open door tea party and complain. I seriously hope that you never have kids or are a role model for anyone, and if you do have kids I hope that they escape from you quickly and realize that you are a fraud and will not let them pursue anything that they enjoy because of your "do-not-try-because-you-will-fail" soulless attitude.
Go do whatever it is that you enjoy and let everyone else do whatever it is they enjoy.
wait, i thought you just said that you "pretty damn good". don't go backtracking on me, that ain't nice.
it's the thrill of the chase, my dear boy, the thrill of the chase.
here we have new media outlets (Flotrack, ChasingXXX series, etc.) trying to promote the sport and you are trying to tell people to quit because they will get too wrapped up. kudos to you for not having a soul.
(ps--i do hope i am making a mockery of your entire running career.)
goddam good post.
you were a selfish ass. you still seem to be an ass and very bitter about the sport in general. i enjoy running, heck i love it, but i refuse to believe that you have to be some self-absorbed ass clown to be good at it. i am as fast as you were but still manage grad school, a marriage, research, church, friends and a lot of time for family. you clearly hate yourself, or the way you were, and regret it very much. i am sorry. i wish someone would have taught you the importance of well-roundedness early on. maybe you would like your life. you are ridiculous if you think you possess knowledge of some transcedant nihilism that renders all attempts at personal improvement meaningless. you persistence in evangelizing your negativity is proof of your ongoing self-absorption, running or not.
