I'm a competitive senior in highschool. One of my goals for my HS career is to go to Footlocker Nationals. I missed the cut last year by 10 or so places. My state meet is this week and after that I have a 2 day break from running and then back to training for Footlocker.
That gives me about 6 weeks till the regional Footlocker race. And with a taper into the regional (which i'll most likely need to boost my chances to the very top) That gives me 5-5.5 weeks of solid training after state. I have been constantly increasing my mileage over the year and last week I reached 70. This includes a good interval session on tuesday with 3x(400,400,800) then 2x(400,800) followed by 12 hills at a significant pace. Then on thursday more hills, and on saturday a similar interval workout as the one on tuesday. So I have OK volume as well as a good amount of intervals/hills to keep me anaerobically fit. I also try to churn out a tempo run or two during the week, but wasn't able to do a significant one this week.
Which brings me to my question...what type/volume/intensity of workouts should I be looking to do in this 5-5.5 week period before Footlocker? Should I focus more on tempo runs or intervals, or both? And also, would it be wise to continue an increase in mileage or to keep it steady and up the intensity of some of my runs?
I'm not afraid to train, I like to work hard, but I don't want to be working hard on something that's not ultimately going to help me on the big race day. So what do you guys suggest?
Thanks!
