Sometimes at the end of a long run when I'm beginning to fade, it seems as though my eyeballs begin to shake - or at least the image at the lower/outer edges of my vision shakes. What's going on here?

It probably just means your eyeballs are shaking
Do you feel dizzy of nauseous? I have Meniere's disease, and my vision shakes or distorts at the onset of vertigo. It's what a drunk would call "the bed spins" or in my case the "pre-bed spins". Dehydration can cause vertigo, which might be causing your shaky vision.
Maybe you hung out at the Chartwell pool too many times and chlorine got in your eyes ?
Maybe Andy Borland smacked out upside your head for not listening ?
Maybe Jim Pitt hit you over the head with a bat too many times ?
Maybe Liz Shelton hit you in the head with a field hockey ball ?
Finally, maybe you dated too many Northeast girls ?
Pendular nystagmus. Some people can do it voluntarily, however in your case, fatigue may be a factor. Same with strabismus; it may become noticeable with fatigue.
eyeball shake
1.5 c skim or 1% milk
2 scoops vanilla ice cream
4 oz eyeball (typically 2 human eyeballs)
1/2 t malt, optional
Combine ingredients, blend on high until well mixed, about two minutes.
Human eyeballs are becoming hard to come by nowadways without the authorities looking for you, or unless you work in the morgue.
I prefer to use cat eyes, all you need to do is find the local cat lady and she will never notice 10ish or so cats missing from the hundreds she has running around.
A little more bitter taste but it is smoother so I think the negatives and positives balance out.
Well, Northeast HS didn't exist when I was there, but otherwise those are all possibilities. Plus, Jim Patton made me run too many repeats up Askewton. To eye doc, thanks. It defintiely comes on with fatigue. I was wondering if it was a sign of dehydration.
