I don't want to see the chemist who invented the drug in jail, I want to see the athlete who used that drug to cheat their way to fame and fortune in jail.
In my opinion, Victor Conte did not violate any sporting code, he didn't cheat or steal from anyone. He invented a steroid that turned out to be invisible to testers and he sold it to any coach or athlete who wanted it. He didn't lie to anyone, cheat anyone or defraud anyone.
The cheating stops with the athlete and to a lesser extent the coaches. In other sports where cheating is more institutionalized you can also blame teams and greedy sponsors, but in T & F the blame can be laid at the feet of relatively few people and we should not muddy the waters and give these people places to hide or safety in numbers by including agents, chemists, managers and "the countless peripheral sites" that make a buck off the doping athlete.
Keep this crusade focused. If we kick the cheats out of the sport all the ancillary profiteers disappear and are no longer a problem.
