Family members are sending my kids savings bonds (EE if that helps). If I have a savings bond issued on 1-31-01 for $200 what is it worth now? Is it worth $200 upon purchase or upon maturation?

Correct. The cool thing about them is they continue to earn beyond their face value after maturity if you don't cash them in. I had a ton of savings bonds ranging from $25 to $50 each (don't think they issue $25 ones anymore) that my grandparents had given me every gift-giving occassion from birth. I just kept them in a folder until after I graduated from college. Took them to the bank expecting just the face value for them all and was pleasantly surprised when it was about double what I expected. The Lovely Mrs. Flagpole Willy and I took a nice little vacation with that money.
As an investment vehicle, I'd not get them, but if someone's giving them to you as a gift, then that's nice.
Thanks all. I don't have them in front of me, but, I think I recall them saying they stop accruing interest after 30 years. Does that sound correct?
Yes, 30 years is "final maturity" for EE bonds. Same goes for E bonds issued after 1965, I believe. Flagpole - You might want to cash those in after all.

Ah yes. I think mine all had maturity dates of 11 years or so. By the time I cashed them in (they are all cashed in) most of them were well beyond 11 years but not quite up to 30 years.
Sorry, brother, I guess I need to read the original posts a little more closely.
