In its preview of the 1500 e-mailed to subscribers, Track & Field News has picked Lagat to win the 1500 and Webb to place 3rd, with Ali of Bahrain picked to take the silver. The explanation is that Lagat has tons more big-time experience than anyone else and is rounding into form as shown by his win in London and his recent 1000 PR. On the other hand, it's clear that T&FN has some doubts about whether Webb can: (a) hold his fitness all summer and (b) handle the pressure of a major championship.
I happen to disagree. Webb has owned Lagat this year (outdoors), has run faster than anyone else in both the 1500 and mile, has (I think) the fastest 800 in the field (at least this year) and has shown a devastating kick. He has run in the last two major championship 1500's and in '05 was a major factor in the final. There is no reason to think he can't step up and win the thing. I think T&FN's prediction is based more on the inability of American distance runners to step up in major championships for the past two decades than anything that Webb has or has not done himself.
