Are they onto something?
my hs coach told me that chocolate milk was an excellent post workout drink. i do it every now and then. actually, i usually do chocolate milkshakes
This idea has been discussed multiple times here. People have posted a nutritional comparison of Chocolate Milk and Accelerade and they are fairly similar per serving.
4 to 1 man...
it has a good "recovery ratio" of Carbs:Fat:Protien (I think it is 4:1:1)
Also, a very high GI drink because of all the sugar....which is fine because when the furnace is hot -it'll burn anything.
no, chocolate is medium GI, also its a strong acid, so if your doing a lacticating session then it won't do you any good having chocolate after it.
Chocolate milk is the ultimate.
Ask Reid Coolsaet, supposedly he drinks it after all his workouts.
It is crap - all protein isn't the same.
Do you think that the "meat" that they use at Taco Bell is the same quality as a steak from Ruth's Chris Steakhouse? If you do, then I have a Yugo to sell.
This is only "good" if you are the typical Let's Run loser who would rather save a dollar on quality food so that you can buy another cheap 6 pack of Milwaukee's Best aka "Beast".
yeah, natural protein in milk (which is commonly extracted and used in protein powders) is much worse than artificial shit in accelerade. We should all eat nothing but powders and bars. The more expensive the better! Don't eat meat, that protein is crap! BUY ULTRAMUSCLE GAIN 2000 PROTEIN BOX AND MAKE SHAKES AND DRINK THEM THAT IS THE GOAL

Definitely. It's always great to see athletes applying what we know from research. I'd also suggest chocolate soy milk if you're lactose intolerant or don't do well with whey-formulated sports drinks like Accelerade/Endurox. Personally, I buy isolated soy protein and mix it (3.5:1 ratio) with a breakfast mix that is like Hi-C (~lots of Vit. C= good for immune system after a long run/hard run).
Our coach had us drink skim milk with 10 teaspoons of sugar in it in high school. That was 20 years ago. He said the protein and sugar helped with recovery.
This is pretty funny because a bunch of guys on a ND football message board were ripping Willingham for this. They felt it was the dumbest thing they had ever heard of.
I started drinking chocolate milk near the end of a long bike ride, and noticed that it helps almost immediately. Maybe it's partly a placebo effect since I've heard so many good things about it, but I feel that I have enough energy to hammer it home for the last 15 miles on a hot 100 degree Texas day.
its just science baby...
you drank chocolate milk with 15 miles left on 100 degree day? Have you seen Anchorman? Honestly, that sounds like it would be the opposite of thirst quenching.
Yeah. What I usually do is have one bottle full of pure water, and one filled with Nuun electrolyte mix. I switch off drinking each one during the majority of the ride, and then start moving into recovery mode near the end of the ride with chocolate milk and a cold Gatorade. Usually works.

THIS is the dumbest thing Willingham ever did:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWr-5qCDvEcYep, great training Mister Willingham. Set them up for a nice 38-0 shellacking that weekend.
This chocolate milk thing is definitely Willingham-esque. God forbid the guy actually spend his time preparing his team through traditional football training. He always looks for the gimmicks. Then again, gimmicks have worked for his career. He's the highest paid ND football coach right now.
Just science baby? You may want to do a little more research into this - as I recall there were a whopping 7 athletes in the study (+/-, but definitely <10). Hardly enough to call that 'science' by any stretch.

Protein and carb drinks have long been used by athletes. Technically, one only needs some carbs and essential aminos afterwards; however, it's not completely practical because you'll need to get a solid meal in a lot faster than if you use a whole protein source (whey/casein/soy/etc). Techincally, you can imply from previous data of carbs and protein after resistance and endurance training that milk would work. There really did not need to be a study on milk, common sense could've saved a couple hundred thousand plus dollars.
I don't really consider drinking chocolate milk a gimmick similar to the whole metronome. All he is doing is providing a post-workout drink along the lines of accelerade. The metronome thing is ridiculous, but this doesn't really warrant the response it has received on NDnation.com. Honestly, I don't really even see why an article was even written on this. Coaches in other sports have been advocating/providing chocolate milk or milkshakes to their athletes for quite a while because personal experience has led them in this direction.
