DI schools can go anywhere within their state or they can go out of state if it is within one-hundred miles of their campus for pre-season practice.
we have 2 a days for 2 weeks and ends the weekend before class begins.

5 Weeks at altitude is about what you need to see some strong benefits from, at least according to what my friends who live at 8,000 feet have been telling me. 1 week is a waste of time and could set you back more than anything.
Here's a good report on the subject, 4 weeks and 8,000' seems about right, but living high, training low seems best.

Our team also traditionally has a week long camping trip the week before camp, although that is generally more focused on drinking and woodchopping than on running.
We went to Fort Davis and Big Bend last year. I believe they are going again probably next week. We got to know each other better while running up some mountains. It was a nice trip until we almost got deported. Good times.
I was at Cal State Northridge in the late 90's.....we went to Mammoth for a week before school started. From my experience and comparing with friends at other schools, it is fairly common, especially in California (esp. schools in big cities) to go away for camp. The theory was to take us away from normal distractions, bond with the team, and allow for 2 a day work-outs and rest time.
If we were to stay at school for that week we would have had problems with students that had jobs, etc.
We even went to Mammoth for camp in High School....if you go to mammoth during the summer you will notice the obvious groups of high school and college teams throughout the city.
