Just curious, I read where Stanford takes the team out to Mammoth about 2-3 weeks before school starts. When I ran in the early 90's I never really heard of such a thing, does it go on often now?

I go to a public D3 school and we just go to a state park for a few days, but some of the private schools I looked at when I was in high school went on week long trips. I guess it depends on the program and how much money it has.
We went on a week long training camp in Mammoth every year. It was by far the best thing we ever did in terms of building team chemistry
This year we're just going up to campus like a week earlier and training there.
this is becoming more common, although the reasons for it vary. some schools travel like stanford, and the point is often some sort of team bonding and/or training benefits provided by a particular place (such as mammoth).
when the camp is done on-campus, it is usually looked at as a way to get in a week of training and help the freshmen adjust before they have to go to classes.
Trips to altitude before school start is a fairly dumb idea if you are looking to boost performance. It would be a fun trip though.
we did my freshman year. we went to the Ozarks for a week. never did it after that. Mosquitos ate us alive.
Funny, i thought for sure this was someone from my team starting this thread, cuz were camping for the first time since ive been on the team and wasnt so sure about it myself. nice to know others do it, but not really looking forward to the mosquitos.
This is an interesting topic. Does anyone have the courage to name actual schools. Let me start - isn't Oregon have a 2 week pre-season camp in Bend, OR?
My team didn't (also '90s), but CU is up at Grand Lake for their preseason camp right now.
We had a camp 1 week before school...D3 in the 1970s.
My team does 1 week of camp for team bonding some where in maryland..
are schools funding these trips? if so, how are they getting around the ncaa rules on this one? you can't leave campus and simply practice for an extended time without a competition.
cu's camp isn't till much later
stuff making stuff up
A lot of schools in California head up to mammoth lakes or lake tahoe for preseason training camps. Teams that I know have gone in the past: UCSB, UC Davis, Chico St., Stanford. I think Fullerton has gone up to the Trinity Alps in the past as well.
UCLA is also a regular here as well a lot of high school teams. There was even a small NAIA school from Georgia here this summer...long trip!
"Much later"?? Students are already returning to Boulder, classes resume in a couple of weeks.
Malone from Ohio always goes to mammoth along with other NAIA schools Azusa Pacific, Concordia, and CS-San Marcos. Tons of high schools go up there as well. UC-Riverside will be up there for 5 weeks this year(a bit much if you ask me).
Just make sure that when you are on your pre-season trip you don't make an ass out of yourselves like Malone did. Chris Lear wrote about them in "Running With The Buffaloes" and how they were talking up how their Kenyan could be Goucher.
5 Weeks at altitude is about what you need to see some strong benefits from, at least according to what my friends who live at 8,000 feet have been telling me. 1 week is a waste of time and could set you back more than anything.
This one time at cross country camp....
