I've had chronic achilles problems for the past 2+ years. I've done deep massage (ART), ultrasound, electric stim, iontophoresis with cortical steroids, eccentric strength training, a night boot, a walking boot for 6 straight weeks, ice, stretching ad naseum, basically anything I could think of short of what I'm told is a risky surgery.
After an aggressive round of ionto and PT, I was able to run without much pain for 6 months earlier this year, slowly climbing back up toward 80 mpw. Now it's back, same as before...dead in the heart of the achilles (mostly the left, but the right is not great either), accompanied by that same small stiff lump of swelling/scar tissue. I've been experimenting with changing my stride (I had a small forward lean before, I am wondering if this has been stressing my posterior chain for the last 25,000 miles and causing my problems), and I think it might take some strain off, but the damage remains. I'm ready to pull the plug.
There are a lot of fantastic achilles threads here. They discuss everything that the doctors have told me, give all the right advice...
But what I want to know is, let's say that I take 6 months off...what the hell am I supposed to do instead of running? I've done almost nothing but run for the last 14 years (I'm 26). Is biking going to hurt the tendon? Not that I own a bike. What else can I do? I don't have access to a pool (though when I was in the boot I did the miserable aqua-jogging thing), but I'm a tad hyperactive and when I don't run I'm off the walls. My running disease has caught tendonitis - now I'm twice as pathological as before.
Any suggestions? Other ideas for treatment?
It's not comforting that my old man was a runner...one who got achilles problems in college and hasn't been able to run for the last 35 years. Am I just doomed?
