so if you were the fastest female in the world by far and wanted pacesetters for a record attempt, who would you use?
. . .
I have no problem with any record that is set on a measured course. if your body does it, it does it.
To answer your initial question: I wouldn't "use" anyone. Even if I approved of pacemaking -- and I don't -- I would never be complicit in the kind of pacing arrangement that Paula had at London that year. She pushed for it, and she got it, with Bedford's assistance. I lost a lot of respect for Paula that week.
Many people take the position that you do: If your body travels the marathon distance, that's good enough for record purposes, even the course is downhill, or the race is wind-aided, or the runner is paced by people or (less commonly) vehicles that serve to reduce wind resistance and decrease the runner's total energy expenditure during the race. I don't agree with that position, and I know that many others feel the way I do.
The difference between the Tergat-Korir arrangement and Paula's arrangement with a phalanx of men has been discussed in detail elsewhere, and I don't want to rehash that at any length here. I would just say that Paula's arrangement may be more akin to using a motor vehicle as a pacemaker and windbreak.
