I have a serious question for guys and gals! I have a daughter that is 14 years old. Three months ago, I found that she was reading about anorexia on the web so I asked her about it. She ended up telling me she was bulimic. We have been going to counseling ever since, she has been taking Zoloft (25 mg)for the past few weeks, and her blood tests came back with great results. She is also seeing a nutritionist. Nearly a month ago my wife and I told her, along with her counselor, that if we could not start dealing with the bulimia (she was fighting us at the time as she thought she was just fine with throwing up) then we were going to have to have her go to inpatient treatment. We were serious, but it was a slight scare tactic. After this we would stay with her after she ate for 30-45 minutes and she never looked like she was anxious about getting to the bathroom to purge. At first she would not want to eat much, but we would give her a very reasonable amount of food that she had to eat. This was a struggle for maybe 3-4 meals and then would just monitor what she ate and she started eating an appropriate amount and wasn't purging after she ate. So, we are going on week four of her not purging from what we can tell and she is telling us that she hasn't. Since going on Zoloft she has been much more open with us and hasn't been giving us the attitude that she is just fine. What my question is, do you think it is possible for someone to just stop purging when they have bulimia. It is as if she decided to try being bulimic and now she has stopped. Is this possible? I want to trust that she hasn't been purging in secret, but I also know how secretive this disease is. I would like your advice and opinion on this. Thanks.
The reason I am writing this board is that I know that writing to a bunch of college age runners is probably a pretty good population to ask such a question as I know how prevalent eating disorders are among college aged women and some guys.
Thanks!
