The college I teach at used to have 67 faculty, and 34 non-teaching full-time staff, which included the pres., a couple of deans, security, librarians, etc. That was in 1967. Now, we have 95 full-time teaching faculty, 250 or so full-time non-teaching personal, and this includes 30 administrators. It should seem self-evident why the cost of higher-ed has increased so dramatically. Does anyone else have any statistics like this?
I don't have any statistics, but every college in my area keep building brand new buildings while keeping the enrollment the same as they increase tuition 6-9% a year compared to the inflation rate of 2%. This is beside the 11% increase in endowment funds led by Harvard which has 28 BILLION !!!!! bucks set aside for a rainy day. I am glad I got my degree almost 20 years ago.
my plan- eliminate all scolarships and financial aid- this will assure that only the upper class, like me, will attend top colleges, let the lower classes attend community colleges or go to Iraq/
Parents been sold a bill of goods re need to have collage edukation, so they bend backwards to pay anything to have them offspring learn ethinc, womens, criminal justice, black, excercise psychology and what-not studies. Expensive training for the life of busing tables. All they have left are photos in the goofy hats at graduation ceremony.

Not just education. A whole raft of middle-management and fluff jobs exist in government or government-related entities.
Something no one else has mentioned is how Universtities let people in for graduate study just to use them as a source of cheap labor rather than hire full professors. There's a reason there are way too many social science majors out there.

College has been dumbed down anyway. So many kids come in needing remedial work that they spend 2-3 semesters taking crap like algebra and english composition. The gender breakdown is continuing to skew more towards women, which is probably good for single guys in college, but not for society as a whole -- well, the world needs ditch diggers, too.
It was $100 credit when I got my BS back in '93, and only slightly higher for my MS in '96. These were both giant land grant schools with 35-40k enrollment, of course. Can't say what it would cost now, but it sure has gone up.

A major research institution has recently announced the discovery of the heaviest element yet known to science. This new element has been tentatively named "Administratium".
Administratium has 1 neutron, 12 assistant neutrons, 75 deputy neutrons, and 111 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312.
These 312 particles are held together by a force called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons. Since Administratium has no electrons, it is inert. However, it can be detected as it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact.

something few people realize-college rankings include several sections on spending. If a college spends less, its ranking will drop. Thus there is no real incentive to decrease spending. Many schools actually spend more per student than they charge (making up the difference with interest from their endowment)
I read once that Cal-Tech spends over 100k per student, and has a 3:1 faculty to student ratio.

My wife is taking a 3 credit grad course in the fall. Her bill today is $1065.00. This is a very "cheap" suitcase college.
College costs (at least in my area) have increased beyond cost of living increases.
