Yes he cheated - but he came 'clean' very quickly (unlike many other cheats who never admit responsibility) and gave all the information necessary to the authorities.
Trust me on this: Cathal learned his lesson, and he will never cheat again. We will see how far he will go now. I think it not unreasonable to expect around 28:45-29:00 for the 10.000 and then marathon in the 2:10-2:12 range. Guys with less talent than him have achieved those times, and Cathal is one of the smartest intellects in the running business - what he lacks in native talent (he is no Mark Carroll or Alisdair Cragg) he makes up with planning and getting the most out of himself. This is a man who goes to training camps and takes notes about what the best runners do on the track and off the track. Cathal is a 'student' of the sport, no surprise coming from someone who holds a law degree and qualified for the Bar in Ireland.
Please also remember that Cathal offered to give back any monies given to him by the Irish Funding bodies.
So once again - he cheated, but let's not ostracize the guy. He is a resource for the future, and will talk about doping and the problems that go with it. He is a reformed doper and we can all learn from him. Thank you. Everyone makes mistakes, and he has tried his best to repent. He is human and fallible. Let us not crucify the poor man.
