Considering the length of many posts, these abbreviations seem to be used more for stating 'I'm in the know' than for keystroke economy.

Internet slang is stuff like brb, lol or, as you misspelled, noob or n00b. We won't even get into l33t at this point though perhaps you are familiar with pr0n. I'm talking about running specific abbreviations that people use to appear knowledgeable.

I agree, those here that use "L-Run" for letsrun are pretty annoying. They save 2 letters.

It's not always about saving time. I'm not sure what it's all about actually, but I've seen college level kids write out posts that have all the s's changed to z's and all these other spelling inaccuracies that actually made the words LONGER not shorter.
In a way, all the online posting and phone texting has hurt some students as far as spelling and grammar goes.
All I know is that I would like to take a couple poster outside a give them a "Half Mary" next time that one gets mentioned.
"half mary" is by far the worst.

What about half thon??? That's pretty lame.
"True Dat"
Because it is uttered mostly by 30 something suburbanites.
Personallly, I really hate the IMO (figured that one out pretty quick, though) and its compatriots. I cannot even remember them, and I certainly haven't figured them out (or really taken the time since I hate them so much), however, I know they look like this: IWOWO, or IMWOIWO---it is just crazy.

In this case it's about piety, religious observance. Per the wikipedia link below:
The words God and Lord (Adonai) are often written by many Jews as G-d
and L-rd as a way of avoiding writing a name of God, as to avoid the
risk of the sin of erasing or defacing the name. Any Hebrew name of
God is forbidden to be erased.
Similarly, observant posters here are aware that any thread may be taken down by the mods at any time. To avoid the possibility of seeing the holy name l-run erased they don't fully spell it out.
