If you're from SE PA and only have a week, I'd hold off on the big trip out West. You'd burn two days each way just getting there and coming back. Here are some other ideas:
Work your way up the Atlantic seaboard from the Maryland beaches to New Jersey, NY metro area, Connecticut-Rhode Island, MA-Cape Cod and on into Maine. Getting hammered, taking some fishing trips, comparing notes, and general f-ing around ought to produce some good stories.
Or: Head north into the Adirondacks, the St. Lawrence River area, and then into southern Canada. Loop around Lake Ontario through Toronto, catch Niagara Falls and some place in the Finger Lakes region on the way back.
Or: Head to midwest and do the grand tour of Big 10 college towns: Columbus, Bloomington, Ann Arbor, Madison, etc. End up at Evanston (Northwestern) and catch a few sights in Chicago. Drink yourself silly in each stop--won't be too hard and should produce plenty of fun. If you are in shape, run each school's XC course while you are there, or a mile on their track.
