Watching the unfolding political dispensation in this country for the last 5 years or so, a casual observer can't help but wonder about a few things that have evolved since.
Any reasonable and ordinary thinking man has more questions today than answers about a leadership gone bonkers, an administration gone haywire.Things seem to have gone awry!
To state this observation is only a reflection of what so many in America and the rest of the world have come to conclude.
Sample this;
During the 2000 Presidential campaigns, then Gov. George .W. Bush repeatedly made to the people the pledge that if elected president;
1. "..as soon as I place my hand on the Bible, I will swear to not only uphold the laws of our land, but I will also restore honour and integrity to the White House! ..."
..and as if that wasn't enough, Richard .B. Cheney added;
"On the first hour of the first day, we will restore decency and integrity to the Oval Office. They will offer more lectures and legalisms and carefully worded denials. We offer another way, a better way, and a stiff dose of truth."
Obviously 'they' referred to Clinton and Al Gore.
2.During a speech in 2000, bush said thus;
that his administration would "ask not only what is legal but what is right, not what the lawyers allow but what the public deserves."
3. In one of the 2000 campaign speeches alongside then running mate Dick Cheney, this is what George Bush said;
"I am proud to have Dick Cheney at my side. He is a man of integrity and sound judgment, who has proven that public service can be noble service. America will be proud to have a leader of such character to succeed Al Gore as Vice President of the United States.."
4. In a clear reference to Bill Clinton and Al Gore, Bush said thus;
"This administration had its moment, they had their chance, they have not led. We will."
Six and a half years down the line, all seems lost and when I say all, I mean ALL! These are not the goods we bargained for, these are not the goods we were promised! We were sold suspect goods or so do 70% of Americans think!
What happened?
What went wrong?
How can a regime be so utterly incompetent?
How can a regime be so utterly amateurish?
How can a regime be so reckless?
And when all this is happening, an administration acts as if all is well. It acts as if life is honeymoon.
How can a regime be so blind to reality?
When the people tell them that the emperor has no clothes, woe unto them. They are defeatists who practise cut and run whatever that means.
How can a regime be so blind to reality?
How can a leadership be so removed from the truth?
How can a leadership be so divorced from reality?
In the year 2000, when all those nicely sounding statements and pledges were being made, who was fooling who?
In his book 'Things Fall Apart', African novelist Chinua Achebe says that we have to know or find out "where it is that the rain started beating us."
If I may borrow the writers words, where is it that the rains started beating us?
Was it the point where we preferred to elect a guy who would stop on the highway and help us change a tyre after a tyre burst?
Was it the point where we elected the guy who we'd love to have a beer with and in the first place, have we?
Was it the point where we preferred to elect the guy who is likeable?
Was it the point where we elected a guy who cloaks himself in phony moral authority? A guy who sat or stood on that high moral pedestal and talked down at his predecessor who was immoral?
Where did the rain start beating us?
Something is seriously wrong.
