Lets just wait and see how many of the Russian women turn up to the World Champs shall we. The 1500m in Helsinki aside they Russian women tend to have the fastest times in the world prior to a champs and then don't turn up.
Given their dubious past, i'd say they were still on the rocket juice.
Exactly. In the US, UK, Australia and so on, running is often a balance with social life and enjoying the things life has to offer. For a lot of teenagers, there's a lot out there (note: not all).
It's a generalisation but when there's the drive to escape the current life you're in, and running is one of those routes, it's going to produce better results and absolute desperation and determination drive those to succeed.

Tennis is another (even more lucrative) check out the number of Russian women in the Wimbledon field, compare with the number of Russian men.

You should read Silence of Great Distance. It talks about the Russian/European women mid-distance runners from the 70's putting in 100+ mpw and running 1:53-58. Maybe it was the drugs (which it talks about in the book).... maybe it was the mileage.... or both. But, there is something to be said about developing the aerobic system, even for the 800m, considering the event is ~70% aerobic.

I thought the 800 was around 51/49% aerobic/anaerobic?
Isn't the mile the event closer to around 70/30 (66/33)?
If you check out the link I provided, research has found 800m's tobe more aerobic than previously believed (old method-- 50/50). A more recently study by the same group found similar results (800m-- 66% aerobic, 34% aerobic; 1500m-- 84% aerobic, 16% anaerobic).
