so if joe dickhead tells me that it's a mile from point a to point b and i run that "mile" in 3:30 then I'm not a liar who is simply trying to pretend that I'm better than I am for telling people that my mile pr is 3:30.
for the "14:15" 5Ker, you're a liar. you're purposefully misleading people into believeing that you're better or were better than you ever were. Do you mention that your other best time was 1:30 slower and that you it was certainly a short course?
No. But if I'm I've run 15:10 for 3 miles and then go to a race that's advertised as 3 miles and run 14:45 I may well think I've just run a great 3 mile time, especially if the times around me are consistent with what people with whom I'm familiar are running.
I know this is hard for people to understand now, but in Lindgren's pime years the emphasis was on RACING. People were not as fixated with times as now so if someone told you that a race was X distance you tended to believe them. Now, some people are more skeptical than others. some have a higher opiinion of what they can do than others have so maybe you are certain it was short course and I'm not. So forty years later I say I once ran 3 miles in 14:45 and you say I didn't. The guy still did things that no American distance runner ever did and probably created more excitement about distance running than anyone before him ever had.
