Yes I too was actually fortunate to be in attendance of this stellar moment in commentating history early today.
Anyways Jim Sorensen, who is probably the "Rodney Dangerfield" of track field was indeed introduced to the crowd as "Mark" Sorensen following his victory in the Master's Mile earlier today at the USATF Championships.
After O' Brien introduced Sorensen, Jim then said to O'Brien " well actually my name is Jim". It was a classic moment in live broadcasting. It was kind of funny for us who know Jim, but at the same time if it had been Craig Mottram then who knows what his response would've been!
A little bit of history; Sorensen is the same guy who was mis-identified as his teammate back when he won the NCAA II National Championships in the 1500m. He was also the same guy who finished second in the 1996 Olympic Trials 1500m, a .02 behind Paul McMullen, but didn't get to take a victory lap with McMullen and third place finisher Jason Pyrah because he was receiving medical treatment under the stadium.
But hey the guy now holds the Masters 1500m WR and the Masters 800 US record so at least that will go down in the books correctly.
In all seriousness GREAT job JIM, we're all very proud of you. Keep on rolling man!
Mark
