The Haile Gebrselassie article on letsrun home page addresses the following underlying problem U.S. distance athletes face. Our kids just do not act this way. Their parents do not think this way. As a track and soccer coach, and father of an 11 year old, we walk with the dog to school, 1.9 miles, and fight a carpool line of 100 cars converging from every angle in the neighborhood. We also run 5 evenings a week, easy base for long-term intro to fitness, and bring the dog everywhere for fun. We are freaks in our area, complete solitary beings on the streets as parent-child runners. So how would we ever expect to compete, honestly, given this (see home page):
Reporter: What was your routine as a budding athlete?
H.G.: From the age of five I used to do the things you see in films - running 10km to school and the same back home. In some parts of Ethiopia they are still doing the same. They start running at five and they are very good when they start doing serious running. It gives you a good headstart!
