Assuming Lagat makes the 1500 team, surely he won't run both. That bodes well for Riley or whoever gets 4th in 1500, no?

I can't imagine Lagat turning down the 1500m and running the 5000m. I think it'll happen the other way around. But I more so think that he will run both.
Good question. Heck, he may pull a Niyongabo on us and run only the 5, depending on what others do. That crazy Lagat just likes to keep us guessin'.
do the top finishers need to have the A standard to compete at Worlds? does riley have the A standard for this WC?

Riley doesn't even have a B standard. He cannot be nominated for the team.
http://www.usatf.org/events/2007/IAAFWorldOutdoorChampionships/entry/selectionProcedures_TF.asplagat said afterwards he would NOT be doing the 5 at worlds.
From what I gathered from malmo's link, if an athlete had not attained the B standard by the end of USATF's they could not be nominated to the team. Also, according to the USATF's top marks list, Lagat, Teg, Goucher, and Riley did not have the B stadard going into the meet nor did they get it at the meet... So, does that mean Moran is the first guy selected seeing as he already has an A standard?... There was no information on the USATF website about chasing a B standard. They stated that an athlete who had a B could chase an A, but would they allow them to chase the B?
If that's so, then the USATF will nominate Tegenkamp, Goucher, Moran and Solinsky. Riley and Asmerom are SOL.
That's fine, I like all those guys representing the US. But could some one explain why Teg and Goucher get nominated? Neither had the B (13:28) going into or coming out of the meet (according to the USATF website)...
Lagat will let them know in Osaka about 5 minutes before the start.

The qualifying window for Osaka began in January of 2006. Teg's 13:04 and Goucher's 13:10 qualify them.

The qualifying window includes last year's races (January 1 2006 -), which means that Lagat, Tegenkamp, Goucher and Moran have A standards. Solinsky has a B standard and would be nominated ahead of both Riley and Asmerom should Lagat not run, neither (Riley, Asmerom) made either the A or B standard The B window window slammed shut today. They're done, there is no such thing as chasing the B standard.
Gotcha. Thanks for clearing that up
Actually there's a conflict in USATF's own selection criteria.
"World Championships "A" or "B" Standard: The top Ranked Order Finishers who have achieved the "A" or "B" standard by the end of their event at the 2007 AT&T USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be nominated to the 2007 World Championships team provided they meet the IAAF entry requirements below."
Then this:
Scenario III
Scenario III represents a situation where two (2) "A" standard athletes, one (1) " B" standard athlete, and a non-standard athlete are in the top 4.
Results
1. A 1. A
2. B 2. B
3. NS 3. Would have to get the "A" standard to be entered
4. A 4. A (Will be entered and only if #3 gets "A" would become the alternate)
5. B
6. B
7. NS
8. NS
Riley and Asmerom may yet have a crack at it.

How come we are "nominating" 4 people, i thought we could only send 3. Do we nominate 4 and send 3?
I dont have time right now to read all of the rules
