The first 8k was a tempo run, and Mcdougall made a smart call to wear racers. Though he probably lost some ground in the final lap of the 10k, overall he maximnized his performance capability and points by saving his legs some stress.
What Lydiard says wouldnt matter at all. I wish to God, Lydiard had just once said, Hey! Try thinking for yourselves!
And Daniels/ oxygen cost of running stuff really isnt applicable here either when you have your lower leg muscles in big ol'knots. Oxygen cost/ running "ëcomnomy" has been dissociated from both RPE and time to exhaustion in endurance exercise; so old news guys, except at USATF coaching clinics. If you REALLY want to see good running economy go find a midget who does megamiles training, refuses to stretch, has minimal basic speed, and has skipped both breakfast and lunch.
