He said in the flotrack interview he wore flats in the 5k prelims and 10k to save pounding on his legs. He wore spikes in the 5k final:

I don't know about him, but I couldn't run 20k in three days in spikes.
I could. Maybe he should run more in his spikes.
Spikes don't help you out any more in a 5k or 10k than a pair of flats. A good decision by a tough runner.

But wait a minute... according to Malmo (per the IC4A McDougal thread), back in the old days you could run forever in spikes and not feel any ill effects in your legs, feet, achilles, etc.! McDougal needs to get tough like Malmo.

Cushioning 'saves pounding on the legs'? Anyone have scientific support for this?
ask lasse viren
In the jack daniels book it says that spikes are no more efficient than flats or vice versa in dry conditions
since i've watched meb run 27:20ish in flats, me thinks you can run just fine in flats. heck, i ran 4:0something at mt sac in the mile one year in flats, we all ran around 3:50 at the downhill mile in austin one year, etc. just making the point that it IS possible to run real quick with flats.
dude-
My theory: it affects everyone differently, because we're all different. We all have different muscles, strides, arches, gait cycle, etc. For some, spikes in an 8k XC race for example are just fine, for others like me it just thrashes out their legs. I always run much worse in spikes in the longer stuff like 8k grass courses. I stick to the light road flats. After comparing spikes vs flats in distance for 6 years I can tell that spikes trash my legs much quicker.
Maybe you should get some tougher legs.
Does anyone have any numbers to support any of this? I can feel the difference in traction when running the track in a spike vs a flat, and I wouod imagine that there's also a difference in energy lossed to the midsole.
i would rather know why so many people care so much about mcdougal? every time you open letsrun, everyone is talking about mcdougal. he got spanked. solinsky buried his ass. maybe you should be asking: why are people so overly concerned about a guy who loses and don't care so much about a 5-time ncaa champion?

No you didn't.
i think the majority of you are excessive. who cares...it was obviously a good decision. he scored more points than any other distance runner at the meet.
the ones saying he needs to toughen up, i hope u r joking...u may run races and practice in spikes...i also bet u dont run at high levels.
if ncaa champions never seem to really pan out at the international level, in the majority of cases, why do we care about shoes worn by the guy who gets 4th.

Yeah, but you could always start your own thread instead of whine for no good reason.
actually i did. check stanford results from 2002 or 2003, can't remember which one. he already had his american record and missed it this time but ran it in flats b/c he was coming off an injury or something like that.

Doesn't matter what he says, what did LYDIARD, say? And Lydiard would probably say that you should go with which ever you are more comfortable with.... you decide.... his guys ran in spikes on cinder tracks but on synthetic tracks not as important......
