How is he as a person and coach? Nice, kind caring?

This thread is going to get fugly, fast.
Before it does, I will say this - He's a decent guy. Not amazingly warm, but not frigid either. Someone looking for a super nurturing relationship with a coach probably won't get it from him, but I think the right amount of intimacy is present for a sucessful athlete-coach relationship.
I'll state that my knowledge is all second-hand from a friend who ran for him, so take that for what it's worth. I will also warn that he's not terribly well liked on these boards, though, so I imagine you'll get a fair share of negativity. And if you already knew that and are just trying to get a rise out of everyone, well played, well played.

How would you know he is a "decent guy" if you've never actually met him.
I have met and been "coached" by Sandoval (I am a Cal alum who ran on the track team).
Sandoval is not a hardass. He is a apathetic LAZY ass. He plays favorites and only is genuinely friendly to a select few on the squad. He values silly drills over good, smart workouts and mileage. He forgets appointments that he has made and confirmed with recruits/athletes. He sleeps away half the day. His team consistently underperforms. Only reason he hasn't been fired yet is that he gets one star athlete to "save" him every time his ass in on the line.
It is really sad to see this at one of the greatest universities in the world. Cal track and field has a strong heritage that has not been carried on by lousy coaches such as Sandoval!
GO BEARS!
