whatever happened to this guy? he looked amazing as a junior last year, I thought he was going to do something really special his senior year, but i haven't heard anything about him.

won NIN mile
as reported on dyestat this week:
Yellow Springs sr Samuel Borchers 4:16.37 1600m, 1:51.54 state record 800 and reported sub-1:50 anchor on winning 4x8 state record 7:48.39
I have not heard of him losing any race in track this year (actually, maybe he lost early in indoors, I think he had a couple of slower races over 4:30), and he seems to run to the level of his competition. I think he will fare pretty well at nationals.
I watched him run at the state meet. It was the first time I had ever watched him run. What I read is what I saw in the 1600, he only runs to the level of his comp. In the 4 x 800 they were behind a few seconds at the handoff and he just put it down. I was sitting by 2 people that had him under 1:49.
He looks ready to roll. If he was close to our did break 4:00 in the 1600 or mile, it wouldn't shock me. This kid has freakish abilities.
The dude runs for a Division III high school here in Ohio which means that he has the luxury of mostly coasting through most of the outdoor season. He will show you more of what he threw down last year in the post season meets. I think he had a mid season injury to deal with as well so hold your horses there big boy.
I really believe he wll struggle in college (at least in the beginning) abd Beth will have her hands full. Not a very strong srudent at all, amazing speed, likes to party.
Borchers has only really had to run hard 2-3 times this season. The first was the Darby Distance Twilight Meet where he went 2:10/2:00 to hold off Jake Edwards (2:10/2:01) and the regional/state 4x800 where i have heard splits ranging from 1:48 high to to 1:49 mid
Why not run the Pre meet?
Borchers schedule is already set. Google him and you should be able to find the article.
He runs just fast enough to win. Jake Edwards, who he beat in the middle of the season won the div 1 1600 in 4:09.
I had Borchers in 1:48.9 split. Take a little off for the running start and he would have cruised a 1:50. I was hoping he was a little farther behind when he got the baton. I am sure he could have put down a 1:47.5.
My guess is he will run 3:42 1500 this summer at Juniors. The mile he is going to run is before that .
If he ran very slow this year, it was probably just to pace his teammates along. They improved their 4X8 from 8:15 to 7:51 this year.
People said the same thing about the kid from Coos Bay. Gondak and Sam will get along just fine. Sam isn't stupid, he'll figure it out.
borchers has not lost since junior nats last yr i believe (certainly not track). he didnt go to regionals in XC and basically runs to win. no one thought he would win NIN because he had run so slow, but he did. He WILL win NON.
He's a stud in track, not so much in xc.
I have not only seen him run, I raced him at xc states in Ohio this year. He's the real deal! He ran from behind the whole race until he busted out a sub-5:10 last mile to win in 15:50. 2nd place, Nicholas Dysle was 2 seconds slower. Borchers didn't even pass me until early in the second mile and I finished the race :46 seconds behind him. I have no doubts he could go under 1:48 in the open 800 if pushed! He's as smart of a runner as they come. He won NIN and he will win NON.
Anyone else reminded of Bobby Curti's high school career?
bobby curtis could run xc....so the answer is no.
how is a 5:10 last mile considered to be "busted out" in a 15:50 5k? that's slower than the overall race pace. even if it were a 3-mile, it's hardly faster than the first two miles.
Well buster! I meant the come from behind, race to win, rise to competition thing, smarty pants!
Like I said, he's really impressive in track, but I watched him run a 17:00 at the Mideast Meet of Champions last November.
Whne the kid cares anough, he is a fantastic talent. He will struggle in college being "on" throughout the season when you have to get qualifying marks and such. I could see how some college coaches had some reservations, but I can also see how others could see the potential and were willing to gamble. He is NOT a cc runner though. Not saying he isnt' tough enough, but the kid doesn's really like to run (yet).
