My wife is a la leche league leader and we are both big advocates of breast feeding for much longer than the normal American household. Our children will never drink formula barring an emergency.
Look folks, we are mammals and we are distinguished from the rest of the animal kingdom because we drink milk from out mother's tits. Nothing can take the place of that regardless of what the formula people tell you.
If you look at the skyrocketing rates of ADD/ADHD, autism, allergies, asthma, etc. you will also notice that they coincide with a drastic decline in the rate of breastfeeding. I understand that there is no proven causal link BUT there is no doubt that we (Americans) have changed the way infants are born and raised more in the last 50 years than in the previous ten thousand. Other cultures with different attitudes towards breastfeeding have much lower rates for many infant diseases as well as later drug addiction and even violence. These links will never be proven but we feel they are related.
Americans really need to change their views on breast feeding. This actress really doesn't care who sees her breast. Neither does my wife or most of her friends. But, a woman who is insecure about breastfeeding in public could easily see a thread like this one and feel like it is not worth it. We need to be a culture--and I rarely say shit that grandiose--who embraces breastfeeding. If it makes you uncomfortable, that is your issue.
