Swimming and no running is better than no swimming and no running.
Summing and 100MPW of running is usually worse than no swimming and 100MPW of running, since you'll be too tired to put in enough energy into those running workouts.
Next question:
Does anyone have any hardcore proof that running helps your swimming for a 400m swim? I'm just getting into my summer swimming training and i wanna know how much i should devote to cross training stuff like that.
I'm not sure what you might consider "hardcore proof," but when I was in high school I went from running in the 14s for the 3200 to running in the 12s after I joined the swim team one year.
You would have been better if you spent that extra time running more miles and/or intervals instead of swimming.
Unless you're injury prone after doing a relatively low amount of mileage.
nah im not injury prone at all, im just worried that if i go too far past 65mpw that i will get injured, and i wanted an alternative cross training method so that i wouldnt get injured.
so you dont think itll help get me from like 18:00 shape to 17:30 shape?
Swimmers do miles of swimming and runners do miles of running!
Swimming is a good form of excercise and uses most muscles in the body. Runners only use it mainly to maintain fitness during injury or to add some variety to training sessions occasionally to beat staleness/boredom of constant pounding those miles away!Aqaujogging is popular with some athletes as a general strengthener and training model.
If you have to cross train, go on the bike. Don't swim.
It helps a lot less than running does. Run as much as possible, you shouldn't have energy enough leftover to splash around in the pool if you're doing it right.

WHY???
All things in moderation. If you've been running awhile and your technique is down for the most part, substitute an aerobic type swimming workout about once a week to dampen the effects of the hard mileage on your bones.
I think you're very smart to look into an alternative cross type aerobic event "before" you get injured.
Swimming is a great way to mix it up, stave off boredom and give your joints a rest while still getting aerobic work in. Nice during a blazing summer day. I use a kickboard and some old swim fins that I cut about 1/2 the length off of. Don't bend your knees too much. use your hip flexers and quads. Do about 30-40 minutes of laps.
