I'm new to Indy and, besides the Mini, trying to identify what competitive races (sub-16 5K, sub-33 10K, sub-1:12 HM participants) are available. What's the story on the competitive racing/training scene?

It's all about the Indy Classic Marathon.
check Ken Long's website -
There are many races throughout the year and lots of competition since there is almost always prize money available.
Another source for upcoming road races -
- not always offering $, so check the previous year's result to see the competition.
Also - a great place to get running shoes, apparel:
Athletic Annex (the staff is helpful & many are top area runners)-
Good luck!
Join Indy Runners...a good organization.
re the above, website is, as you would expect, indyrunners.org
I don't really race much anymore (too busy evading park cops out on the Monon after dark), but here's a few that I recall being more competitive..
Dick Lugar 10k in early Sept - sub 33:00 winner last year
Pleasant Run Run 5 miler Oct - 5:00 pace winner last year, has been faster in previous years
Jingle Bell 5k - early Dec, 15:08 winner last year
Shamrock run - St. pats Day -- someone good must show up?
I'm sure there are more. There are some summer track series (Zionsville -- see runz.com) and also Bob Kennedy's place put one on as well at IUPUI, not sure how fast these races are going (the z-ville ones are pretty slow...though you might be able to run a fast mile up there).
If you're looking for a change of pace, you can try the Runners Forum summer X-C races. 5K's with mainly high school kids, but fast ones....As the summer starts to end, some of the college guys come out too.
