In high school I ran 4:26, 9:34, and 15:36 5k. Not blazing but I was looking forward to college running. Over the summer going into my freshman year of college I started to feel VERY tired ALL of the time, especailly while training! Via the advice of you guys here at LetsRun I went to the doctor and got some blood work done, everything came back normal. I kept training, and kept feeling like crap, but I delt with it.
A long story short, I am now finishing up my sophomore year of college and running has been terrible. I have not even run as well as I did in high school. It has not been from a lack of desire, effort, training, or coaching. I just simply feel exhausted 1 lap into a race! I feel tired all of the time, not normal tired like after a workout, but tired all of the time!
SO, I went BACK to the doctor last week, it's been almost 2 years since I got blood work done the previous time. This time I went to a SPORTS DOCTOR as it was suggested by a friend of mine because I guess runners and "normal" people can have different readings? Whatever the case, I got my results back and the doctor says that I have low iron levels. He said they are not EXTREMELY low, but they are low none the less. He said this is most likely the reason I have felt SO drained over the past 22 months and that if I were to get on an iron supplement that I should start feeling A LOT better very quickly.
I was just wondering what kind of iron supplements any of yall take, what works best? Price is a factor as I am a poor college student! I'm also not sure about the amount to take, but I guess the directions will tell me that? Can you take TOO much iron and it have an adverse effect? My friend also suggested to me taking a glucosamine (sp?) pill which he said would help to aid in recovery?
Any advice is appericated as I'm sure many of yall have had low iron levels. I am currently taking a week off from running starting Sunday (my season will be over), and I want to get this all straightend out before I start training for next xc season.
