I was surprised that Paula elected domicile in Monaco (South of France) for much of 2006 and part of 2007.
Monaco is a beautiful place to go for a vacation if you have money (a lot of...), but as a training place it is really terrible. There is absolutely no soft ground to train on (unless you count the grass in the soccer/Athletics stadium Louis 2), no trails, no forests...no nature whatsoever. Monaco is a concrete jungle, nothing more, nothing less.
The nearest trails are about 40km away at a park called 'Vaugrenier' in Villeneuve Loubet, between Nice and Antibes. Very inconvenient to get to, and even that park is limited because the trail is only about 3-4 miles around.
I wonder if Paula actually does all her training on the roads around Monaco, elbowing her way past the jet set and Italian tourists, most of whom would be completely oblivious to the presence of the worlds greatest distance female distance runner.
A very strange choice of a place for a world class distance runner. Distance runners usually look for places where you can run on soft ground. Monaco has absolutely no soft ground.
