I'm sure with his 51 second 400m speed he could probably bust a 1:53.

Or he could just blaze a 4:24 like he did a couple of weeks ago...
When looking at a runner, a time may sound slow, but consider his training, what his coach is having him peak for, and the strength of other events.
My junior HS year times:
880y - 1:56.9
mile - 4:18.3
2-mile - 9:00.3
Just because you are a 1:57 runner, it does not mean you do not have speed. Your body is developing, and he may not have worked on this type of racing. I focused on 800/mile training as a senior, and dropped 6.70 seconds in the 880y and 12 seconds in the mile. I believe that Mr. Lanana recruits people that will provide fire power, long term. He is the pilot of his airplane, and recruits individuals that what to sit in first class and trust in the person flying the plane.
No one would have recruited at 1:57 runner based upon those times, yet 1:50.20 was the fastest time in the country a year later.
Let's see where Chad's attitude and training take him in the next 2 months. I am sure he draws on his inner strength, and uses the talents he has been given to the fullest extent.

I believe 2 cross titles and an outdoor on the men's, and a little more success on the women's 3-4 tiles. I think the above poster that used the term meat grinder, is spot on. I also think that it is a crying shame that there is a lemming effect when it comes to talented kids. And that's all I have to say about that.
I think you forgot to mention the number of individual NCAA champions, olympic trials champions, olympic qualifiers, world championship qualifiers, a 1-2-3 sweep of the NCAA 10K, a numbing amount of NCAA scorers etc.
How many?

That is exactly what a meat grinder does. You work everyone so ridiculously hard that there HAVE to be a handful of athletes who have amazing accomplishments...what doesn't get talked about are those that had the talent, but should not have been doing the survival of the fittest technique as a major component of their training, which is something that Vin does do.
And one of those athletes chewed up and spit out by the Stanford machine is now an assistant coach at Oregon.

well, in oregon's defense. I am not seeing any dominance at the NCAA meet XC, indoor, or outdoor yet.
Hmmmm....I believe that Mercado was one of the top Freshman at the NCAA XC last year, if not THE top guy. Well, if this trend continues......in a few years.......well, you figure it out!
