I applied to several grad programs in history (with the goal of eventually becoming a college professor). I've weighed my options and come to the decision that both Oregon and Temple have professors with whom I would love to work and academic reputations that would give me a good chance of being accepted into a top PhD program in two years (or simply continuing at the same school). I've done the research on the academics and the programs are pretty even in my book. But now I'm wondering what are some of the pros/cons about one place or the other. As a runner, it seems that Eugene is the obvious choice. I'm from Ohio, so the geographic change might be welcome. The weather in Eugene is better than Ohio and Oregon is beautiful. Basically, I guess I'd like to know if there is any reason not to choose Oregon? Anyone from Philadelphia or Temple care to give their two cents? I'm going to spend the next week thinking it over carefully and would love to hear any helpful opinions or comments before I commit myself and my girlfriend to one place over the other.
