yea and who was the nazi sprinter and what sprinting event did they compete against each other?
Erich Borchmeyer of Germany finished fifth in the 100 behind Owens in the '36 Berlin Olympics. Owens' top rivals in both the 100 and 200 were Americans. The top European was actually a Dutchman, Martinus Osendarp, who got bronzes in the 100 and 200.
But Owens did beat German favorite Lutz Long in the longjump.
Yeah it was Lutz Long who was the long-jumper that supposedly advised Jesse Owens to launch from well behind the line to avoid another foot foul and elimanation. Long (who had just set an OR for his jump) was outjumped by Owens. Owens got the gold, Long the silver.
"It took a lot of courage for him to befriend me in front of Hitler... You can melt down all the medals and cups I have and they wouldn't be a plating on the twenty-four kilates friendship that I felt for Lutz Long at that moment."
—Jesse Owens on being advised and congratulated by Lutz Long at the 1936 Summer Olympics.
If only someone could invent a way of enabling people to search vast amounts of information held around the world electronically. Imagine the possibilities.
I think you might mixing up the stories of Jesse Owens and Joe Louis, the boxer, who lost to German Max Schmeling (sp?) and then defeated him the second time.
Incidentally though Schmeling was paraded by the Nazis as some example of German supremacy, he detested them (the Nazis) and wanted nothing to do with them. Also interesting is that he helped out Joe Louis towards the end of Louis' life.
