[quote]I do find it kind of interesting that the buses aren't rolling much earlier, in spite of the start being moved up 2 hrs. That indicatates to me that they were bringing people out too early for the previous 111 years.
nope, they just now have a bigger place and better area(s) to unload - they have more room with the new two-school set-up in Hopkinton
unloading faster means it takes less time to get everyone out there
Just a note to say that I took that bus exactly 45 years ago when there were only 181 starters in the Boston Marathon.
Not sure what the cutoff times are, but I'm in Corral 14; Wave 1 is Corrals 1-10, and Wave 2 is Corrals 11-23+.
It's true -- I probably don't need a one hour warm-up, since people seem to regularly shoot the wad in the first 6 miles of Boston, and I generally go out pretty conservatively. I was just trying to be generous in saying that I'll be bored for 1.5 hours; in reality, it'll be more like 2 hours. But I've been thoroughly convinced now that I won't be bored; I just might be without personal space or a place to pee, that's all.
you're not required to stay inside the fence of the "village"
you can find peace and quiet if you look for it - i do every year
if you're up to it, you can walk to the start line and watch the wheelchair and women's elite starts at 9:25 and 9:35
Check your info booklet - -there's a map of the Hopkinton area, and there are portable john's in the shopping center parking lot between the Athletes Village and the Start line (on the left just before Main St as you walk to the start). Line are usually better there if you want a last-chance pit stop.
And empty gatorade bottle (esp. one of the gallon ones) and a few sheets of newspaper to cover up your act makes a good portable (tho barely private) "facility" when you are waiting at the athletes village. P-a-J lines are insane there. But donlt be a jerk, when you are heading out dispose of your "gastorade" bottle ina gentlemanly way
the time goes faster than you may think. good luck
Joseph is correct on these details, as is 13 timer.
One thing I have discovered is that the need for over hydration is not necessary now that so many water stations are available on the route. I find the extra weight in the belly isn't conducive to a relaxed start.
I would also guess Mr Atkins has a hand written letter from Jock Semple detailing his time and place among the 181. Those are priceless gems.
I may have such a letter, but what I do remember is that Jock once drove me back to the airport. It was like a carnival ride. Very very frightening!
